Thorpeness is one of the Suffolk Coast's hidden gems which remains so wonderfully timeless.
Sharing an unspoilt beach with neighbouring Aldeburgh, it is within easy reach of London, the Midlands and the South-East. Nearly a century ago, the architect, barrister and playwright, Glencairn Stuart Ogilvie, created his mock-Tudor seaside holiday village, among the purple heather and golden gorse.
His intention was to provide a safe and healthy, fun packed holiday environment, where children could enjoy the magic and innocence of a traditional seaside holiday.

By the 1930’s, the Country Club, Golf Club, 65 acre ‘swallows and amazons’ Meare and The House in the Clouds had all appeared. A decade earlier, the legendary James Braid laid out the 18-hole, 6241-yard heathland golf course, which today boasts the reputation of being one of the best of its kind in the country. G.S. Ogilvie’s dream has stood the test of time and now this pretty seaside hamlet is witnessing a new generation enjoying the Thorpeness magic.
